Fallout 3

I just finished Fallout 3 for the XBOX 360 and I must say I am thoroughly impressed. I am a RPG junkie as well as a big fan of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, another game by Bethesda. Let’s do a rundown of what is so good about Fallout 3.

Game: Fallout 3
Developer: Bethesda Game Studios
Publisher: Bethesda Game Studios, Zenimax Media
Release Date: 10/28/08
System: XBOX 360, PS3, PC
DLC: (Currently) 5- Operation: Anchorage, The Pitt, Broken Steel, Point Lookout, Mothership Zeta

Ok, so a little background information. Fallout 3 is the 3rd game (obviously) in the Fallout series. As for the synopsis, I’ll let Wikipedia handle that for me.

Fallout 3 takes place in a post-apocalyptic, retro-futurist Washington D.C. and parts of Maryland and Virginia in the year 2277 after a world war over resources which ended in nuclear holocaust in 2077. The player character (PC) lives, with his or her widower father James (voiced by Liam Neeson) in Vault 101 (a fallout shelter situated close to the ruins of Washington, D.C.), until one day, the PC wakes up to find that James has left the Vault and ventured into the Capital Wasteland – as the area around D.C. is now known – for unknown reasons. The Vault Overseer becomes suspicious and orders his men to kill the PC, forcing him or her to go out into the Capital Wasteland where they must follow his or her father’s trail and learn why he left. Along the way, the player will encounter various factions, including the Brotherhood of Steel, a group of technology-coveting survivors from the American west coast, the Outcasts, a group of Brotherhood of Steel exiles, and the Enclave, the elitist and genocidal last remnants of the U.S. government.

There are six Vault-Tec Vaults which can be explored across the Capital Wasteland, many showing the results of a “Vault Experiment”, or social and psychological experiments imposed by the elected overseer.

This game was simply amazing. Intriguing new features such as its karma system and V.A.T.S. With the karma system, things that you can do throughout the game and different paths along missions will determine whether or not you have good karma or bad karma. For example, lockpicking or pickpocketing things that do not belong to you will result in negative karma. However, in the case of The Power of the Atom side quest, (SPOILER) you have the option to disarm the atomic bomb or blow it up destroying the town/killing many people. (END SPOILER) The V.A.T.S. system is the aiming system for this game. If the player has enough Action Points, they can use the system which will allow you to shoot at a specific body part (head, torso, right arm, left arm, etc) and see the percentage that it will hit the target. The game won’t take too long depending on how many side quests you plan on doing. It can take anywhere from ~12 hours to 40 hours. Also add about 6 hours for each DLC pack. I have yet to play any of the DLC but will most likely get/beat Operation: Anchorage this week. Let’s hope it’s as good as they say it is.

Note: Fallout 3 was the winner of IGN’s Best Game of 2008 and Gamespot’s Best RPG of 2008.
