Alternative Press 100 Bands You Need to Know In 2010

•February 24, 2010 • Leave a Comment

So its that time. Every year AP Magazine releases the 100 Bands You Need To Know for that year. I’m going to post the ones that sparked my interest (imo) after going and listening to all of the ones I can find online (and believe me some of these people aren’t on iTunes or have myspace or purevolume accounts), give my two cents and call it a day. If you want the full list go pick up AP Magazine volume 261. Now from a quick glance through the list, some of these bands have been flying right under the radar so some names may be familiar. (By the way so I don’t have to type everything 100 times it’s going to go name, where from, sounds like, and my two cents if I have any.)

  • Abandon Kansas
    • Wichita, KS
    • Muse, The Killers, Kings of Leon
  • Call The Cops
    • Long Beach, CA
    • Forever The Sickest Kids, The Secret Handshake, Breathe Carolina
    • So I never heard this band until this article and I must say, as a fan of Forever the Sickest Kids, these guys know how to rock the pop punk scene. Definitely worth a listen if you’re a fan of any of the bands above. They recently toured with We The Kings and will be on Warped Tour this coming summer.
  • Flood of Red
    • Airdrie, Scotland
    • Circa Survive, Thrice, The Receiving End of Sirens
  • The Bigger Lights
    • Fairfax, VA

    • The Forecast, The Anniversary, Hey Monday
  • The Cab
    • Las Vegas, NV
    • Maroon 5, Panic! At The Disco, Hey Monday
    • These guys were featured in the list for 2008 but they’re still flying under the radar. They’ve had two songs featured as downloadable content for Rock Band and definitely deserve a listen.

    • Hot Water Music, Jawbreaker, Polar Bear Club
  • Those Who Lie Beneath
    • Portland, OR
    • Behemoth, Suffocation, Cannibal Corpse
  • Every Avenue

Random Musical Thoughts

•November 14, 2009 • Leave a Comment

So, I’ve been on a very sporadic random music binge recently. I’ve found some interesting artists that I haven’t heard of before and have been listening to some older yet still this decade songs. Here’s a nice little list, if you can’t think of something to listen to, of stuff to check out.

New and Unknown?

  • Skyscrapers Walk Among Us
    • Hardcore, screamo style. The self-titled EP is out on iTunes currently.
  • After Midnight Project
    • They were on this year’s Warped Tour. This is more of a hard rock 30 Seconds to Mars-esqe type band. They’re full length album, Let’s Building Something to Break, is out now. Check out the single, “Take Me Home.”
  • Orianthi
    • Warning: This falls under the Kelly Clarkson category. However, I first heard the single “According to You” on a radio station in NYC a few days before she came on the show. Orianthi was going to be the guitarist for Michael Jackson’s “This Is It” tour, meaning Michael Jackson hand picked her so it’s worth a listen.
  • Hoobastank’s Cover of the Ghostbuster Theme
    • The original will always be the best but this rendition is interesting so check it out.
  • We Came As Romans
    • Hardcore band who’s album “To Plant A Seed” is out or soon to be released. It sounds more like Throwdown/Killswitch Engage but it has some parts that sound like 30 Seconds to Mars so it is an interesting combination.
  • mc chris
    • He’s not new but he’s not very popular. This man is the all time king of nerdcore. He’s MC Pee Pants from Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Hesh from Sealab 2021. All I can say is this guy is the man. Give it a shot you may very well be surprised.
  • Owl City
    • I know these guys are allllll over the place now with the single “Fireflies” but come on gimme a break. It’s goddamn addicting.
  • Motion City Soundtrack
    • Hey all you MCS fans, the new album is up for preorder and the single “Disappear” was given out on their website for one day only. The song is pretty good and not to mention Mark Hoppus of blink-182 hopped on to produce the track. Go pick up the album whether pre-order or when it comes out!
  • Jay Sean
    • Everyone by now probably knows the song “Down” and if you don’t come out from under the damn rock. Well, the new single was released to retailers a few weeks ago but back in September I got to hear “Do You Remember” featuring Sean Paul and Lil’ Jon and all I can say is brace yourself this will be the new song you hear every hour soon enough…. and its actually good for now til its overplayed!
  • Agraceful
    • Same area as We Came As Romans. Their album “The Great I Am” I believe is on iTunes.
  • Motionless In White
    • Sounds like The Devil Wears Prada. The album “When Love Met Destruction” is on iTunes.
  • Aqua Teen Hunger Force
    • Want to cry from laughter?? Like Aqua Teen Hunger Force???? You’ll love the christmas album “Have Yourself A Meaty Little Christmas.” The cast of ATHF sings the classics such as “Jingle Bells Deep”, “Hark! The Herald Angels Rap”, and “O Holy Tonight.” And don’t forget to listen to “Feliz Navidad” (Carl: Can we sing it in English??)

Old and A Great Flashback

  • Thrice-The Artist in the Ambulance
    • This album was one of the first CDs I ever purchased back when I was 12. Great songs come from this album including “Under a Killing Moon”, “The Artist in the Ambulance”, and “Stare at the Sun.”
  • Thursday-A City By The Light Divided
    • “Counting 5,4,3,2,1” is still one of my favorite songs by Thursday so it’s always a treat to have a little flashback.
  • Anything from Tony Hawk Pro Skater Games
    • Millencolin-“No Cigar”
    • Bodyjar-“Not The Same”
    • Goldfinger-“Superman”
    • just to name a few
  • Say Anything-…is a Real Boy
    • This album is just awesome and I know a few of my friends will kill me but…. I called her on the phone….
  • Puddle of Mudd-“Blurry”
    • Remember this song??
  • The Mighty Mighty Bosstones-“The Impression That I Get”
  • Reel Big Fish-“Take On Me”

Hope you’ve enjoyed my selection of music. Hopefully you can listen to this for a little while or at least expand your horizons.

So I’ve been having some problems and I need a place to vent my thoughts. Since my attempt to help my friends by posting links to CDs they wanted was shutdown by the RIAA I’m avoiding that route again. I’ll still post stuff music movie tv video game related stuff just not stuff that can get me in trouble. I’ll have the first “expression” post tomorrow or later tonight if my night continues this way.

Ok let me start off by saying I haven’t watched the VMAs yet, but I have heard what controversial event happened this year and I just wanna know…. Kanye West, do you pride yourself in being the world’s biggest douchebag???? I mean seriously let the girl accept her award. She won fair and square but your dumb ass had to get up on stage and tell everyone that Beyonce’s video is better or is the real reason because you weren’t in the spotlight for 2 minutes? If Beyonce’s video was better it would have been her on stage accepting that award and not Taylor Swift. You have become the laughingstock of the musical community. Well, now you have your spotlight. Enjoy it while it lasts, jackass.
